If you use natural cleaning and personal care products, you have probably come across Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB) in your label reading. What is it exactly? And is it safe? What is Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB)?  It is a surfactant* and foaming agent used in plant-based cleaning and personal care products. Cocamidopropyl Betaine may be synthetic or plant-derived, with either form considered safe to use in daily products. The plant-derived version means it is naturally derived fatty acid from coconut oil. We use it in SuperRiinse 3-in-1 Dishwashing Liquid as a main cleaning agent.  What is a surfactant? Surfactants are molecules that reduce the surface tension of water, which helps it spread out more uniformly. In cleaning products, surfactants help the cleaner spread out and get underneath dirt, food particles etc. They are used in every type of cleaner.  Back to Cocamidopropyl Betaine.  We chose it because it is one of the most gentle cleaning agents available. CAPB offers gentle yet effective cleansing, luxurious foam, and thickening properties, making it an amazing addition to household cleaning and personal care products. It is also:  100% Biodegradable Mild, Gentle and Non-Drying (making it ideal for even the most sensitive skin) Works great as a fruit and veggie wash  Safe for babies and pets (a.k.a. safe for all!)  Before we started Riinse and started learning about formulations, we had no idea how difficult it is to find a surfactant that meets these criterias and actually works as well as the harsh ones. After much searching, formulating and many many more reformulating, we are so happy with the results of using Cocamidopropyl Betaine in SuperRiinse. In today's world, everyone cares more about what they bring into their homes, especially when it comes to household cleaning products. It is definitely a good thing! However, most people are still not aware of the potential risks in common ingredients like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) found EVERYWHERE.   The Downside of SLS and SLES: These widely used ingredients are known for their foaming and cleansing properties. However, they can also strip away natural oils from our skin and scalp –leading to irritation, dryness, and potential long-term damage. Health Concerns: Studies have linked SLS and SLES to skin and eye irritation, and even hormone disruption in extreme cases. Exposure to these chemicals through daily use of everyday products can contribute to a range of health issues, especially those of you with sensitive skin or allergies. Environmental Impact: Beyond personal health risks, SLS and SLES pose environmental concerns as well. These chemicals can persist in the environment, harming aquatic life and ecosystems.    The crazy thing is that SLS and SLES are found in a lot of products we use beyond just cleaning solutions. Common products that may contain these ingredients include: Shampoo and conditioner Body wash and soap Toothpaste Facial cleansers and exfoliants   So next time you are in the supermarket or online shopping, remember to look out for these ingredients before you hit “check out”.
